Minds Matter Tour Day 2: Old Man River to Waterton National Park

Minds Matter Tour is Graham’s 8 day, 1,500 km, self-supported cycling tour for the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation – Child & Adolescent Mental Health and the Family Room at Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert, SK (Ronald McDonald House Charities-SK). Please consider donating to these two difference-making charities.

What a nice camping spot at Maycroft on the shores of the Old Man River. Thanks again to Lorisa and Flash (our schnoodle) for driving the two hours there, setting up camp, making dinner, and doing everything to make Day 1 a success.

Also, thanks for cooking up a delicious breakfast while I reconfigured all the gear to get me through the next few days (downsizing included). Finally, I was packed, could barely lift my bike and gear and began the first challenge of the day – walking up the rough gravel road from the river valley.

Once I got moving, it was nice riding, and soon I was headed down Hwy 22 to Lundbreck Falls on the Crowsnest River. It was so hot at the falls, I needed to fnd some shade. Beautiful spot, and meditative to listen to the crashing water.

On next to Lundbreck for a lunch stop and a lot of water. I love the charm of these small towns.

Strong westerly headwinds and the need to get water in Lundbreck saw me on Hwy 3 to Pincher Creek instead of a scenic way. Minimal traffic, but I got a nail in my back tire. This meant a lot of unpscking and sitting in the heat. I was happy to get going again. On through Pincher Cr and the long climbs of the last 50 km to Waterton. Great road, with little traffic. Met a very nice couple who had cycled from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, and were on their way to the southern tip of Argentina! More information on their page at www alaskatoargentina.org.

The viewpoint overlooking the valley to Waterton was breathtaking. Finally, a downhill stretch to the Park boundary, although a headwind slowed progress. I was tired on what seemed like a long ride to camp after reaching the Park gate.

Had a late night eating some delicious pizza, enjoying a beer, and enjoying an open mic session with some locals.

Getting ready for day 3 on a hazy morning by Waterton Lake. Off to Writing on Stone Park today.

Minds Matter Tour Day 1 complete!!

Firstly, thanks to my amazing Wife, Lorisa, for driving two hours to the Old Man River, setting up camp overlooking the river, and cooking dinner! I am so spoiled! Tomorrow, I load up the bike with all my gear for the ride to Waterton.

I was feel8ng pretty queasy when i finally rolled in after a day pf tryin to balance electrolytes and water. Some growing leg cramps, compounded by constant up and down hill today (and my lack of hill training this year)! Got it sorted out though.

My ACH Foundation fundraising link is not working. I’ve emailed them. If you want to donate to #albertachildrenshospitalfoundation Minds Matter Tour, please try back in a day or two. Thanks!

Manwhile, the #RMHCSK fundraiser for the Prince Albert Family Room at Vitoria Hospital is going well. It’s also a great cause to donate to. There were over 1,500 families from across central and northern SK used this facility in 18 months since it ooened in 2016. Wow! I can’t wait to atop in there next Saturday.

Will try to snap some photos tmw!

Minds Matter Tour Day 0

Thanks to my beautiful friends for joining me for a day 0 spin from AB Children’s Hospital, and especially to Erin for hosting us for refreshments!

It was a beautiful day. After some last minute fitting of racks on the Salsa Fargo I’ve decided is perfect for this tour. It was so nice to feel the love and support of many people sending good wishes and donations to these two amazing charities.

Lorisa is driving to tomorrow’s camping spot, snd sonit will be nice to have some company and not much gewr to carry. A good way to ease into the trip!

Best wishes

Graham

Updated Maps for Minds Matter Tour

Hi Everyone!

Well, I’ve finally done some updates to the Tour Stage Maps on the site. Here’s a little summary of the plans by day from July 28 – August 5, 2018:

July 28: Community Ride (meet at Alberta Children’s Hospital apple orchard) and we start a 25 km cycle at 4 p.m. See previous blog for details and link to route map!

July 29: Day 1 of the big ride. Weather looks HOT, and this should be a nice ride (with a few hills) from Calgary out to 22X, down 194 St to Black Diamond, and from there on Hwy. 22 to the Old Man River! Hopefully there is room at the first come, first serve camping at Maycroft Provincial Recreation Area!

July 30: Day 2 – Hopefully today will be a fairly relaxing day of riding down to Waterton, with a few more hills, and some opportunities to stop and smell the wildflowers! A ride to the upper lake is an option!

July 31: Day 3 – Where did July go, anyway?! The mileage picks up today as I’m headed back out of Waterton to Cardston, then SE and E all the way to Writing-on-Stone Park. The only camping spots left were RV spots, so it should be spacious camping!

August 1; Day 4 – So excited that I am heading to Medicine Hat today to see Corrie and David! It could be a day of headwind or tailwind, but current forecasts after the mini heat wave have a cool down pattern in the weather, which might mean a northerly headwind!

August 2; Day 5 – Adding on the miles, heading out of the Hat, and NE on Highway 22 through eastern Alberta. Crossing into Saskatchewan (pirates beware) and then to Burstall, Leader, over the South Saskatchewan River, and on to Eastonia (looks like a cool small town)

August 3: Day 6 – Excited that Jane and Dave are going to join me this evening (driving in from Camrose). We hope to make it to Elbow to visit some friends, but Outlook on the shores of the South Saskatchewan is also a possibility!

August 4: Day 7 – May the fun begin Jane and Dave! I’ve got a feeling I am going to be so happy to put some of my bags in your car (can I, oh please??). Wait, I have to carry them all? Today we follow close to the South Saskatchewan River into Saskatoon. We have a nice little route planned along the river bike paths. Then it’s off up Highway 2 to Duck Lake, land of the NW Rebellion. Not sure if we’ll get a detour over to Batoche!

August 5; Day 8 – Are we there yet? Not quite, but how come this tour went by so fast? Today, we have exciting plans to visit the Family Room at the Victoria Hospital in P.A., hopefully catch up with the Gariepy’s, take a little detour west to Shellbrook (if it hasn’t rained), then head north to the edge of Prince Albert National Park. From there, it’s a nice little stretch of beautiful gravel to the park gate, then on to Emma Lake! We should be having a little celebration with the good folks from Ronald McDonald House Charities-SK and, of course, Lorisa’s massive family gathering!
